Description: The original description reads: "This is the Taylor Street Canal Bridge taken March 22, 1911." This photo shows the state of the Miami and Erie canal in Dayton in the 1910s. The Miami and Erie Canal connected the Ohio River in Cincinnati and Lake Erie in Toledo and was completed in 1845. Running along the right of the canal is the "electric mule" track, a machine that ran on rails that would supposedly do away with the old method of mules and horses that propelled the canal boats. The electric mule never became widely used, however, as canals were almost completely abandoned shortly after the electric mule was developed in favor of pure rail transportation. Description: Caption reads: "Third Street Bridge 1898, Dayton, Ohio, Montgomery County." Ohio has a large number of covered bridges, falling second only to Pennsylvania in quantity. Within the state of Ohio, Fairfield County and Ashtabula County lead the state in containing the most original covered bridges. The company advertised on the side of the bridge, M. Ohmer's Sons Co., had a furniture store located on the corner of Main and Second Streets in Dayton, Ohio in 1857. A family furniture business, the company was restructured and renamed M. Ohmer's Sons Co. in 1878 upon the retirement of father Michael and purchase by son John Francis. The company specialized in ornate, solidly built white oak furniture, supplying the furniture for many government buildings, including the furnishings for the Wood County Courthouse in 1895 and the Supreme Court Justice Bench and legislator's desks for the Florida State Capitol in 1902. The company also manufactured furniture for households, offices, and banks, selling many types of wooden filing cabinets. M. Ohmer's Sons Co. disbanded in 1927. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph from the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus is of Eugene Harris, a 24-year-old male from Montgomery County, Ohio. His formal attire suggests that the photograph was taken during his trial or sentencing. Harris was the 227th individual to be executed via the electric chair in Ohio. The caption at the bottom reads: "No. 227, Eugene Harris of Montgomery County, Legally Electrocuted October 23, 1940, for the Murder of Policeman Lucius Rice, at Dayton, Ohio." In 1885 the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio, became the location for all executions, which previously took place in the various county seats. In 1896 the Ohio General Assembly mandated that electrocution replace hanging as the form of capital punishment. The Ohio Penitentiary regularly offered tours as well as souvenir photographs and postcards of the building and prisoners on death row. A total of 315 prisoners, both men and women, were executed in the electric chair known as “Old Sparky” between 1897 and 1963. View on Ohio Memory.
